How to Get There
Although located on Mount Desert Island, this preserve is only accessible from the water. You can land small boats and kayaks easily on the property’s beach. Your nearest public launch options are the Bass Harbor ramp in Bernard (about a 2.75-mile paddle along the shore) or Seal Cove to the north (about a 4.3-mile paddle).

Getting to Know Mitchell Marsh
Home to its namesake marsh, this preserve was acquired by MCHT in 2008. The property features over 30 acres of wetlands and 4.5 acres of wooded upland and cobble beach. These diverse wetland habitats draw a variety of shorebirds, tidal waterfowl, and wading birds.

How We’re Restoring Marshes
Many tidal marshes in Maine aren’t working the way they’re supposed to, but through restoration we can improve chances of successful marsh migration as sea levels rise in the decades to come.
