Join Kirk Gentalen on a hunt for the natural treasures of the forest of Clark Island Preserve. A huge variety of native mushrooms appear throughout the woods on Clark Island, and there’s no one better to excite an interest in these fascinating fungi! You may know Kirk from his regular columns Vinalhaven Sightings Report and Naturally Distracted. If you’ve met Kirk before or read any of this work, you know how much he loves to share his enthusiasm for the natural world with all ages. He has over 20 years of experience, leading hikes and sharing the fungal world with thousands of people from Alaska to Maine.
The natural history of mushrooms and their role in the ecosystems will be the focus of this day’s outing, but every species is different. “You can never tell what’s going to come up on a fungus walk,” says Kirk. “Having a group look for, find, and really discover the world of fungus is a unique setting for a walk – and there can be discoveries at every turn!” This walk is suitable for all ages. Adults will learn just as much as kids!
Parking is at the Clark Island Overflow Lot (see below). We will carpool/shuttle over to island once everyone arrives, so please do not be late.

Parking:
Please respect our neighbors and good partners at the Craignair Inn and do not park in spots reserved for Inn guests and patrons, or on the shoulder of Clark Island Road. Doing so may result in towing.
We will meet at the Overflow Lot which is located 0.75 miles back up Clark Island Road on the west side. Turn into the gravel driveway across from the Wheeler Bay Refuge fence and park facing the left side of the concrete slab. Don’t block the turnaround or other vehicles. You may also park around the entrance as long as you’re not blocking the road. Parking is dawn to dusk only and at your own risk; this is not a monitored lot and has been made available through the generosity of a local landowner.
Craignair Inn patrons should park in the rest of the lot, though are welcome to visit the preserve without moving their cars.
