FIELD NOTES
Getting to Know Bailey’s Mistake
This 11.5-acre coastal preserve, acquired by MCHT in 2018, sits on the northern shore of Bailey’s Mistake—a small harbor on the Bold Coast in Lubec. The property is divided by Wallace Cove Road; the smaller western parcel is dominated by forested wetlands, while the larger eastern parcel features mostly open habitat, an attractive sand beach, and outstanding views.
Given the preserve’s small size and long history of being mown, grazed, cultivated for potatoes, and bush-hogged, the species diversity on the preserve is limited. However, MCHT staff have identified at least 54 vascular plants. The shoreline habitat is also popular with migratory songbirds in the spring and shorebirds during the late summer.
STORIES FROM DOWNEAST
How We’re Restoring Marshes
Many tidal marshes in Maine aren’t working the way they’re supposed to, but through restoration we can improve chances of successful marsh migration as sea levels rise in the decades to come.
