Jacob Sattler, MDI Regional Steward

Jacob Sattler

Jacob was born and raised in Bar Harbor, where his love for the outdoors was shaped by exploring Acadia National Park. He began his conservation career with The Nature Conservancy of Maine, where he got to know Maine more intimately from stewarding lands spanning the entire state.

In 2014, Jacob joined MCHT as the Mount Desert Island Assistant Steward, a role he held for six years.

Driven by a spirt of adventure and exploration, Jacob spent the next five years abroad, living in Japan and most recently working as an outdoor adventure guide in Germany. Despite his travels, the Maine coast was never far from his mind. He returned to MCHT to take on the role of MDI Regional Steward, fulfilling a long-held dream of returning home.

Jacob continues to explore Maine’s wild places with his dog, Trek, and still finds time for the occasional international adventure.

On land conservation:

“The conserved properties and islands along the Maine coast are truly world-class. They’ve long served as sources of inspiration for artists like Winslow Homer, writers like Ruth Moore, and naturalists like Rachel Carson.”

“But their value goes beyond beauty and inspiration: They are also places where neighbors gather in community gardens, where clammers access the shore, where students engage with the natural world, and where ecosystems remain intact, allowing native plants and animals to thrive without disruption.”

“As a land trust, MCHT is entrusted by the public to protect and steward these lands and the many ways they enrich our communities. I’m deeply honored to be part of that mission.”

On the job: As the MDI Regional Steward, Jacob manages preserves on Mount Desert Island, the Cranberries, and other surrounding islands.
