Getting to Know Babson Creek

The Path to Conservation

MCHT acquired the bulk of the property in 2002, thanks to a donation from the Maine Coast Partners. In 2009, MCHT completed construction of an office building and stewardship barn on the preserve.

On the Preserve

First settled around 1810, Babson Creek Preserve has a long history of human activity. Despite this, the salt marsh bordering the creek remains relatively undisturbed and represents one of the largest and most diverse protected salt marshes on Mount Desert Island. The preserve’s open fields afford long views across the wetlands to the mountains beyond, while its mosaic of natural and managed habitats is of significant ecological and scenic value.

The open nature of the land’s maintained fields affords easy access to the creek’s western side and a hand-carry launching area for small boats.

Stories from Mount Desert Island

How We’re Restoring Marshes

Many tidal marshes in Maine aren’t working the way they’re supposed to, but through restoration we can improve chances of successful marsh migration as sea levels rise in the decades to come.
