The Biddeford Forest Project
Biddeford, ME
PRESERVING A CRITICAL RESOURCE
Saco River and Beyond
The high-quality water of the Saco River is a critical natural resource and the sole drinking water source for about 40,000 residents. A recent collaboration between MCHT and the Maine Water Company will permanently protect more than 257 acres of forest and open space in Biddeford, a conservation effort that will help preserve the river’s water quality, protect rare wildlife habitat, and offer a new place for people to explore.
What’s Next for the Biddeford Forest Project
MCHT is raising the funds needed to care for this property forever. This investment will keep nature close to Maine’s youngest downtown—a vibrant, culturally rich, and diverse urban center—and protect this vital landscape for decades to come.
The Work Ahead
Ensure walkers can enjoy the beauty of the expansive forest.
Seek regular input from community members.
Install informational signs and improve the trail system.
Improve access to the land over time to ensure it’s a valued resource.
I’m proud to support the new Biddeford Forest Preserve—a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect greenspace for the people of Biddeford. It’s an investment in our health, our environment, and our community—and I’m thrilled to see it moving forward.”
—Marty Grohman, Biddeford Mayor
