Sand Cove Great Wass Island
Beals Island
HOW THIS PROJECT CAME ABOUT
Sand Cove Great Wass Island
This expansive, 120-acre property at Sand Cove on Beals Island, close to Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s Seaduck Point Preserve and The Nature Conservancy’s Great Wass Island Preserve, includes miles of shoreline and diverse habitats home to many fish, birds, and other wildlife, including some endangered and threatened species.
This area is recognized by the Maine Natural Areas Program as one of the richest intertidal marine systems in the state and is recommended for national funding from NAWCA (North American Wetlands Conservation Act) given its high ecological value.
Looking Forward
Thoughtful stewardship of this place will protect wildlife and provide new recreational opportunities in the area. Visitors will enjoy trails and access to a remote sand beach, activities like walking, picnicking, hunting, and fishing, and continued use of Mud Hole anchorage.
MCHT is working with a landowner who owns the entire point. She plans to sell the majority of the property to MCHT for conservation while retaining an area surrounding an 1800s-era granite wharf.
MCHT is working with the landowners who have owned the entirety of the point, and together we have made progress on the effort to conserve 117 acres of the property (including Sand Cove) while the landowners retain a parcel including an 1800s-era granite wharf. The landowners are currently reaching out to other local partners to explore future uses for the wharf, which could include recreational access, youth and adult outdoor education, and possibly shellfish and kelp aquaculture—all uses that could benefit the Beals community.
