Sheep Cabin
Just a short paddle from Owls Head, the small cabin on Sheep Island offers a relaxing island camping experience, with a few added amenities.
This simple, rustic, one-room cabin sleeps four in two twin bunks and is equipped with the basic amenities listed below. Tucked into the wooded edge of a small field on the island, this cabin offers visitors a home base while they venture out and explore the other two islands of MCHT’s trio of Owls Head preserves. Just to the north and easily visible from the Sheep Island landing beach, lies Monroe Island with its beautiful Spruce-Fir Forest and nearly 2 miles of trails to explore. Slightly farther away and to the southwest is the 47-acre Ash Island, a great spot to pull ashore for a picnic lunch.
The Sheep cabin is seasonally rented on a limited basis. Rate, availability, terms, and detailed directions are below.
In an effort to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to experience these cabins, rentals are limited to one cabin stay per household, per year, regardless of cabin location

Availability, Rate, and Booking
Sheep cabin is available for 2-3 night bookings:
- Friday afternoons to Monday mornings
- Monday afternoons to Thursday mornings
Check-in is 2 p.m. Check-out is 10 a.m.
The rate is $50 per night with a 5-person maximum.
Limit one reservation per household, per year, regardless of cabin location.

Sheep Cabin Details
The cabin comes equipped with:
- A two-burner camp stove and a charcoal grill
- Plates, cups, mugs, utensils, basic cooking implements, coffee press, saucepan, and 8” Banks Fry-Bake pan
- A 52-quart cooler
- Two sets of bunk beds with camp mattresses
- Extra air mattress for the floor
- A small portable “toilet” with W.A.G. bags provided
- Trash bags, paper towels, toilet paper, and fire extinguisher
- Nearby firepit (this is shared with day users and campsite users)
- Dog bowl and mat for canine visitors
- Rain barrel (wash water only – not suitable for drinking; not reliable in dry summers)
- Picnic table
Visitors will need to bring:
- All food, drinking/cooking water, and ice for the cooler
- Sleeping bags, pillows, and towels
- 1lb propane cylinders for the camp stove and/or charcoal for the grill
- Additional paper towels and toilet paper
- Flashlights, headlamps, or other light source
- Matches or lighters
- Waste bags for dogs
The Sheep cabin is on a preserve open to the public. While the cabin area has been marked as private, you may see other visitors on the island both for day use and overnight use at the campsite. Please be respectful of these users with regards to noise and shared space. Dogs are welcome, both on the preserve and at the cabin (there is a large dog mat and a stainless steel bowl), however strict voice or leash control is expected.

How to get there
The two best ways to access Sheep Island are from the all-tide, paved public boat launch on Mechanic Street in Rockland or from Richard Carver Harbor Park on Lighthouse Road in Owls Head (hand-carried boats only).
From Owls Head the distance is about one mile and from Rockland the trip is just over 4.5 miles. Approach the island from the north and utilize the sand and gravel beach where small boats can safely land. Cabin renters may also use the MCHT mooring located around 350 yards offshore of the northern beach; be prepared to row or paddle ashore if using the mooring.
A tidal bar can make accessing the landing beach difficult for larger boats – at low tide, there is only about a foot of water, so consult the chart and plan accordingly. You will have to haul your gear from the landing beach about 300 yards and up a small set of steps to the cabin, so pack efficiently!
A note on overnight parking: Cabin renters wishing to leave their cars in the Richard Carver Harbor Park overnight need to pick up a free permit from the Owls Head Town Office. The phone number is 207-594-7434.
Terms
- Full payment is required to hold a reservation.
- Cancellation Policy: 100% refund if more than 30 day notice is given.
- Cabin is self-service, and guests are asked to leave the cabin clean and ready for the next guests.
- Removal of all trash at the end of stay is the responsibility of the guest.
