The Bagaduce Fishways Project

MCHT has been partnering with the town of Penobscot and people like fisheries activist Bailey Bowden to protect and restore the Bagaduce River and bring back alewives to this coastal watershed. In 2021, we were excited to complete our fifth fishway project in this watershed, making the Bagaduce the first fully restored watershed for fish passage in the state of Maine. Through our Rivers Initiative we’re also working to protect and restore the health of other key coastal rivers, including the Narraguagus River, the Mousam River, the Orange River, and the Sheepscot River. Making sure these rivers are healthy and connected to the sea is key to making the Maine coast more resilient to climate change. (Why Rivers Matter in a Changing Climate)
