As on most parts of the Maine coast, East Penobscot Bay has a patchwork of islands—some conserved, some not, all strikingly beautiful with a variety of shoreline, forest cover, anchorages and history.

Numerous wetland, ponds, and tributaries, and a salt marsh estuary make up the York River, which flows through the towns of Kittery, Eliot, South Berwick, and York.

Southwest Harbor, Maine, is located just west of the southern entrance to Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County. 

This 1,225-acre preserve in Lubec provides people of all ages opportunities to experience a rugged coastal landscape of cobble beaches, sheer cliffs, and rocky promontories.

Famed Penobscot Bay is enhanced by a collection of islands conserved by many organizations, including MCHT.

This ecologically rich bay touches shorefront in Freeport and Brunswick. Over the last several decades, Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust and other organizations, including MCHT, have worked to protect surrounding lands and the ecological integrity of the bay.

Babson Creek is at the head of Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island. MCHT has a 36-acre preserve along the shore of the creek, featuring meadows, salt marsh, and a small wooded area that attracts wildlife throughout the year.

Boot Head in Lubec features moss-lined paths to coastal bogs, cobble beaches and rocky promontories that offer stunning views of Maine’s Bold Coast.

On Cooksey Drive east of Seal Harbor in Mount Desert there’s a sweet little overlook, protected by MCHT.

Located in a northern corner of Cobscook Bay in the town of Perry, this coastal preserve features stunning views and ample wildlife viewing opportunities.
