You Can Help Protect Sacred Land in Maine

In Maine we are not rich financially, but we are rich in resources—our water, the environment, it’s all connected, we are all connected.
– Tim Shay, President and Spiritual Leader of the Wabanaki Cultural Preservation Coalition (WCPC)

In addition to creating public preserves and building trails, your gifts to MCHT are helping protect sacred land in Maine, like Nibezun along the Penobscot River in Passadumkeag.

Generous donors and loans from Maine Coast Heritage Trust and the Conservation Fund made it possible for the Wabanaki Cultural Preservation Coalition to protect property that was once a traditional ceremonial gathering place for Wabanaki tribes and their ancestors. The site offers the only land access to the Penobscot Nation’s Olamon Island, where people have for centuries collected red ochre used in sacred customs.

Now, the Coalition is fundraising to pay off the two-year loans, permanently protect this place, and open it up as a community center for healing.
