Writing the Land: Maine
“Writing the Land is an attempt to honor nature and our relationship with it in a way that is as equitable and transparent as it is deep and entangled. We intend to be as inclusive—to humans and places—as we hope the mantle of protection that land trusts offer can be.”
New Lands to Discover
2014 was a busy year for coastal land protection efforts. Maine Coast Heritage Trust (in partnership with Federal, State, and local partners) protected more than 1,400 acres from Cumberland County to Cobscook Bay.
Help Protect High Island
MCHT has an opportunity to protect this scenic island centrally located between Long Cove and Tenants Harbor in Saint George.
Lower Weskeag Fields and Forests
In partnership with Georges River Land Trust and the Maine Department of Island Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Coast Heritage Trust is leading an effort to conserve 238 acres on the lower Weskeag.
State and Municipal Funds Bolster Coastal Land Conservation
2014 was a strong year for land conservation projects on Maine’s coast, many of which received funding from state and municipal sources. Projects ranged from protecting popular hunting and fishing areas, to expanding downtown riverfront access to ensuring scenic islands remain available to the public for outdoor exploration.
Nature Blog Shares Stories
With striking sunsets, soaring bald eagles, and lounging seals there is something around every corner of Vinalhaven for even the most casual observers. Since 2007, MCHT Steward Kirk Gentalen has been collecting and showcasing these observations on a community supported nature blog.
Lessons at Erickson Fields
This fall, MCHT partnered with three experiential learning school programs at our Erickson Fields Preserve in Rockport. The collaboration proved fruitful for eight young gardeners eager to engage with nature, serve their community, and attain personal, educational goals.
