Volunteer Opportunities

We offer a variety of volunteer opportunities, tailored to meet your interests, skills, and time availability. Join us for a single day, or become part of a regular volunteer crew. We will train you as appropriate.

Current Opportunities

Volunteer Preserve Steward

Be our eyes and ears on the ground, making regular visits to a specified MCHT preserve. 

Primary tasks include:

  • Regularly visiting preserve
  • Clearing trails and keeping preserves free of litter
  • Reporting back to MCHT steward on trail conditions and visitor concerns
  • Educating visitors about the preserve, MCHT, and our mission

Preserve Stewards must be able to walk on irregular surfaces, bend, stoop, lift and travel to preserve. Multi-season participation is encouraged. 

Naturalist/Historical Guide

Bring community members out to MCHT preserves.

Primary tasks include:

  • Giving guided walks and talks about local plants, animals, and relevant historic events

These volunteers need to be well-researched and love interacting with people. Ability to walk on unrefined trails is a must. All sites available. Ability and willingness to travel welcome.

Special Projects Crew

Team up with other skilled volunteers and MCHT staff to complete trail reconstruction and other projects. 

Primary tasks include:

  • Clearing and buildings trails and campsites
  • Building bog bridging and staircases
  • Constructing kiosks and registration boxes (out of the MDI Field Office)
  • Working on various projects related to farm operations and agricultural education (at Aldermere Farm)

Note that varying time commitments exist and travel is dependent on the project. No experience is necessary but a strong mechanical skillset and ability to lift, carry, stoop, and hike is recommended. 

Aldermere Operations

Support Maine Coast Heritage Trust staff in a variety of tasks.

Primary tasks include:

  • Clearing trails
  • Working with livestock
  • Mentoring youth
  • Staffing Visitors Center
  • Help in the office

There are many different options for volunteers interested in working at Aldermere Farm. Time, skill, and ability requirements vary but tasks are all located on the premises in Rockport, Maine.

Youth Programs

Lead or assist with educational youth programs.

Opportunities are limited to specific regions; please be in touch for more information. Primary tasks and requirements for physical abilities vary depending on the program. Programs may be seasonal or year-round and may focus on environmental education, community service, sustainable agriculture, or health and wellness. 

This position is suited for an individual who has the desire to work with youth and share his/her enthusiasm for nature and the outdoors. Ability and willingness to travel welcome.
