CANCELLED: Winter Walk at Clark Island Preserve

Snow fleas in the winter
Join us on Saturday, March 11 at MCHT’s Clark Island Preserve in St. George for a guided hike with MCHT regional steward and naturalist, Kirk Gentalen.
There’s a quiet charm to a winter stroll through the Clark Island Preserve. Your footsteps crunching fresh snow and the chatter of Crossbills and Golden-Crowned Kinglets triplet call notes may be the only sounds you’ll hear. Or stop in your tracks and you can hear it – silence.
We may just as likely experience a breeze so steady that it inspires us to duck out and take lee whenever possible. Those wintertime strolls are full of shelter appreciation lessons!
Regardless of conditions, a winter walk on Clark Island is one to remember.
With that in mind, Maine Coast Heritage Trust is offering three guided winter walks (January 28, February 25, and March 11) on Clark Island Preserve led by Kirk. Be it birds and marine life, tracks in snow, or snow fleas and mushrooms on a warm winter’s day, we’ll take advantage and inspect whatever the preserve has to offer.
What to Expect
Each walk is two hours long. Please dress for conditions:
- Dress in layers. Bring a backpack with your extras
- Appropriate footwear for snow and/or mud. Ice grippers (i.e. Yak Trax) are a good idea for icy conditions
- Warm hat and gloves/mittens
- Bring water and snacks
- Binoculars or camera if you have them
- There are no bathroom facilities at Clark Island Preserve
Parking
- We’ll meet in the designated MCHT parking area, located towards the back of the Craignair Inn parking lot at 5 3rd Street, St. George.
This event is free and open to all ages. No advance registration is necessary.
Looking for a post-walk snack? The Clark Bar at the Craignair Inn bar is open to the public at noon on these days and offers an assortment of cold and warm drinks and food.
