Merchant Row Clean-Up with MITA & IHT

Volunteers from Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Maine Island Trail Association, Island Heritage Trust, and Osprey’s Echo Sea Kayaking will join forces to clean up the shoreline of islands in Merchant Row.

Meet MCHT staff and the rest of the crew at Naskeag Point Boat Launch– directions here. We’ll board MCHT boats and visit targeted islands to gather beach debris, stopping for lunch, and return to Naskeag Point between 2 & 3pm. Volunteers should be physically fit and comfortable getting in and out of the skiffs and scrambling on slick and uneven shorelines.

This event is free but registration is required.

WHAT TO BRING:

·  PFD: if you do not have a USCG approved life jacket, let Renee know. MCHT has some we can supply.

·  Clothing: even if it is sunny, it can get cool and wet on the water, so make sure to bring sunglasses, hat and sunscreen as well as rain gear (top & bottom) and warm, non-cotton layers for the boat ride.

·  Footwear: you’ll want sturdy, closed-toe footwear and plan to get your feet wet. Rubber rain boots with good traction work well.

·  Work gloves

·  Lunch and drinking water

·  Pocket knife for cutting line & rope (serrated works best!)

·  Insect repellent for ticks

·  Small backpack for keeping your lunch/water with you on the island

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURE:

We can go out in rain, but may cancel for high seas, heavy wind or thick fog. We do our best to make any call-offs for weather the night before, in which case you will be contacted, so make sure to check your email Friday evening. If you will not have access to email let me know a good way to reach you in the event of a cancellation.
