50 Years of Impact

Nonprofit land conservation organization Maine Coast Heritage Trust began in 1970 to protect the qualities that make the Maine coast unlike any other places in the world: wild islands, vast spruce-fir forests, rocky shorelines, and a way of life deeply connected to the land and sea.

From 1970 through 2020, thanks to the generosity of thousands, MCHT made a deep and lasting impact on the Maine coast, helping to protect nearly 160,000 acres of land and over 300 islands. On our fiftieth anniversary, we celebrated all that had been accomplished, and MCHT’s evolution along the way.
