Vinalhaven Basin Preserve Hike

The Basin Preserve on the interior of the island of Vinalhaven is a special place. Covering 360 acres, the waters that make up this large tidal basin are a focal point for inspiring views and home to robust and varied wildlife. Ospreys nest along the Basin shores, harbor seals nurture their young on rocky ledges, and bald eagles soar overhead on thermal updrafts.
MCHT’s Basin Preserve is co-managed with Vinalhaven Land Trust and features roughly 789 acres of protected forest and marsh surrounding the tidal basin. And there’s no one better than MCHT steward and naturalist Kirk Gentalen to lead us on an informative hike through this special preserve!
Kirk will share his extensive knowledge of mushrooms, birds, and otters, along with other flora and fauna, as we hike the trails cut through the maritime forest. On the shore, Kirk will help us identify eiders, ospreys, eagles, common terns, seals, and the wide variety of songbirds and waterfowl that we might observe.
Rocky outcroppings, scenic overlooks, and hay-scented fern fields make The Basin a truly special place to spend a summer’s day.
What to expect:
A member of the MCHT staff will greet you at the ferry terminal in Rockland where you will purchase your own roundtrip ticket for the 75-minute ferry ride (adults: $17.50; children 11 and under: $8.50). We depart on the 8:45 am ferry. On Vinalhaven, we’ll board two vans to the Preserve. Depending on the group’s wishes, there may be time after our hike to spend in the town of Vinalhaven before departing on the 2:45 ferry.
Please be sure to wear sturdy footwear for hiking on narrow wooded trails that have many roots, rocks, and some rough terrain. The trail has a brief section where participants must be agile enough to climb over a short rock ledge.
