Witherle Woods Vernal Pool Hike, Castine

May 10, 2009 :: Comments

1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Field Trip Description

Vernal Pools are considered "critical" habitats and Witherle Woods has got 'em! On this trip we'll investigate known vernal pools and then explore as much of the preserve's 185 acres as we can in search of spotted salamander & wood frog eggs! Each of these important wildlife habitats will be documented including its GPS coordinates.

Directions & Where to Meet

Delorme Map 15 (Grid B-2) - Follow route 166 into Castine, where at the top of a hill adjacent to the Castine golf course, the road will make a 90 degree turn to the right. Make this turn and you are now on Battle Ave; the entrance to the preserve will be approximately ½ mile ahead on the right (there is a sign before a gate, and the entrance is just after the town reservoirs).

What to Bring & What to Expect

Participants should bring good walking shoes (not sandals), extra layers of clothing (examples: wind breaker, rain jacket, fleece), water, food, sun screen, insect repellent, and a hat. In addition, you are encouraged to bring a camera, binoculars, and field guides. Participants should expect easy to moderately difficult trails that will include inclines, uneven footing, and rough terrain.
