Field Trip Description
Join MCHT Southern Maine Regional Steward Amanda Devine for a guided hike around Boothbay Region Land Trust's spectacular Oven's Mouth Preserve. Protected by a conservation easement held by MCHT, Oven's Mouth Preserve encompasses 146 acres of land jutting into the tidal basin between the Sheepscot and Back Rivers. Participants should be prepared for at least 2.5 (and possibly more!) miles of rugged and moderately difficult trail. Once heavily logged and grazed, Oven's Mouth Preserve now features maturing coastal coniferous forest. As we hike, we'll stop to explore whatever we encounter in terms of fungus, plants, mammals, invertebrates, birds, amphibians, historical remnants - anything, really! With the benefit of two adjacent salt marshes, we'll also spend time exploring the fascinating adaptations that allow salt marsh plants to thrive in this highly variable environment.
Directions & Where to Meet
Oven's Mouth Preserve is located between Edgecomb to the north and Boothbay to the south. From US Route 1 just north of Wiscasset, travel south on Route 27 for 8 miles. Take a right onto Adams Pond Road. Proceed 0.1 miles. Turn right onto Dover Road and travel 2 miles. Bear left onto Dover Cross Road. The parking lot is 0.2 miles on the right.
What to Bring & What to Expect
Please come prepared for moderately difficult terrain and dressed for the weather, including one more layer than you think you need, and sun block, sunglasses, a hat, insect repellent, and preferably over-the-ankle hiking boots. Cameras are welcome, and bring your binoculars, since blue heron, osprey and occasionally egrets and eagles have been sighted.
