9 - 11 am

Description

Winter is a fantastic time to get outdoors - snowshoeing, skiing, sledding, and sometimes just plain old walking can all be exhilarating and refreshing. Winter is also a great time to get out and do some nature observing. There are tracks in the snow to be found, trails to be followed and animals to be seen! Not to mention seabirds close to shore!

MCHT's Hamilton Cove Preserve is the perfect place for a winter exploration. The preserve protects nearly 2,000 acres of wildlife habitat, many miles of shoreline, and plenty of spaces for critters to call home in the winter.

Join MCHT for a winter exploration through the Hamilton Cove Preserve on Wednesday, February 8th at 9am. The trip will be led by MCHT Regional Steward Kirk Gentalen, who'll bring his spotting scope and 18 years experience leading nature walks for a guided outing all will enjoy.

The walk will start at the Hamilton Cove Preserve parking area (Boot Head Road - directions below) at 9am and will last two hours. This will be a somewhat strenuous walk with much up and down on uneven terrain. The trip is planned as a snowshoe outing, but will be a lovely winter walk if there is no snow on the ground at the time. The walk will be a mix of stopping and walking so please dress accordingly.

Directions & Where to Meet

From Lubec take the South Lubec Road toward Quoddy Head State Park and bear right onto Boot Cove Road when the road forks. Travel 2.4 miles to a parking area on your left. From Route 1 in Whiting take Route 189 east 5.8 miles. Turn right and follow Route 191 south 2.8 miles. Turn left and travel on the Boot Cove Road 3.5 miles. The parking area is on your right. We will meet at the parking area and then begin the walk.

Description

The Basin Preserve on Vinalhaven is a lesson in cooperation and beauty. The preserve, co-managed by MCHT and the Vinalhaven Land Trust (VLT), has been pieced together over time by both organizations, protecting habitats and views and allowing access to both! Winter is a great time to explore the preserve - there are tracks in the snow to be found, trails to be followed and animals to be seen! Deer, mink, snowshoe hare, river otter, and our local coyote - Vinalhaven's newest known faunal addition - have trails that criss cross the preserve and we'll put ourselves in the right spots to find evidence of their travels.

The trips will be about 2 hours each and led by local MCHT regional Steward Kirk Gentalen. The walks will be somewhat strenuous and over uneven terrain. They are planned as snowshoe outings but in the case of no snow they will be winter walks.

Directions & Where to Meet

The walks will begin at the VLT parking lot located in Vinalhaven's Skoog Park. From Skoog Park we will carpool to the preserve's trailhead.

For those arriving from the mainland, please contact Kirk (see below) so he can plan accordingly. To arrive from the mainland take Route 1 into Rockland and follow the blue "Ferry Terminal" signs to the state ferry terminal. Parking at the Rockland Ferry Terminal is ten dollars for the day and a roundtrip passenger-only adult ticket costs $17.50.

There are three morning trips available for the one hour and fifteen minute crossing to Vinalhaven. The one departing 10:30 arrives closest to the Sunday, January 29 tour start. For those interested in the Saturday, February 11 or 25 tour the best ferry to take departs at 7:00 a.m.

Upon departing the ferry, turn left and walk a few hundred yards to reach Skoog Park on the left.
