To Our Supporters
Well, it looks like 2009 will end on an exciting note for everyone who cares about the Maine coast (since you’ve gotten this far, that probably includes you!).
• *We’re still compiling our land protection totals, but it looks like there’s been a solid increase over 2008 in terms of total projects, land and easement gifts, and the number of whole islands preserved by Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
• Land stewardship at MCHT also took big strides in ‘09, with miles of new trails, a significant increase in guided “walks and talks,” and a greater focus on management planning at our 115 owned properties.
• MCHT set off in new directions on communications as well, with a new website, our first-ever preserve guide, and even a presence on facebook and twitter!
• We moved into our new office on Mount Desert Island, which promptly received a “LEED Gold” rating for energy savings and sustainable design from the US Green Building Council.
• Finally, we raised our commitment to local community engagement, providing a boost to economic and recreational opportunities in a number of Down East Maine towns.
Now, 2009 isn’t over yet - we’re still working to close another half-dozen preservation projects, and our annual appeal is not yet complete. Still, we’re already looking forward to 2010 — our 40th Anniversary year! We’ll begin the year with several more land project closings, and start work almost immediately on our next five-year strategic plan. And, we’re deep into the process of seeking national accreditation from the Land Trust Alliance, to help assure that we meet the highest standards in our land conservation work.
What will never change is MCHT’s passion for protecting the character of the Maine coast. Our mission has grown in the past 40 years, and our staff has, too. But it’s all in service to the vision you share with us - Maine’s coast is unique and we don’t want to lose any of the things that make it that way.
So, for all of you who have supported (or will support) Maine Coast Heritage Trust in 2009: thank you for giving us the tools we need to protect Maine’s scenic beauty, its wildlife, and its character. For helping make deeper connections with those who live and work along the coast. And, for enabling new generations to appreciate and enjoy the rich heritage that awaits them at the water’s edge.
Whether you read this in Maine, or in your winter quarters, we can’t wait to see you again, in one of the places you’ve helped MCHT protect, in 2010. May the New Year be a great year, for you and everyone you care about.
