August 23: Kayaking Amid Petroglyphs on Machias Bay

Sea kayak to several petroglyph sites in beautiful and wildlife-rich Machias Bay. Stop for lunch at Picture Rocks, where, etched into the shale ledges, hundreds of petroglyphs depict the story of the Passamaquoddy tribe's early ancestors. You will be joined by a member of the Passamaquoddy tribe, who will share the historical and spiritual interpretations of the area and the petroglyphs. Machias Bay also offers an excellent opportunity to view harbor seals and bald eagles.

Petroglyphs are pictures of humans, animals, spirits, visions, or events dinted (chiseled) into the surface of rock ledges by a Native American shaman or spiritual leader. These are rare and precious artifacts estimated to be 1500-5000 years old. Picture Rocks is a sacred site for the Passamaquoddys. It holds the largest known concentration of petroglyphs on the Eastern seaboard. MCHT purchased the site in 2006 and turned it over to the care of the Passamaquoddys forever.

Departs from Machias, 11am-4:30pm, $55. Rain Date: No specific rain date has been established, but arrangements may be made should severe weather require cancellation.
