June 7: Explore Malaga Island's Past

Join the School of Archaeology of the University of Southern Maine on this Casco Bay island which is now preserved by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Malaga was once home to a small African-American community whose members were forcibly removed by the State in 1912. Students will share what they've learned about the community as they unearth artifacts from shell middens on the island and cores taken in nearby marine sediments. MCHT staff will discuss the ecology of the island and our conservation efforts there.

Departs from Phippsburg, 1pm-3pm, $10. Rain date June 8.
